According to the companies, this rule will affect not only social media platforms but also Ad-tech, gaming, and other types of services. It was also argued on behalf of the companies that they would have to verify the age of the children and for this, they would have to get KYC done, which would not only put a burden on the companies but would also make it difficult to protect privacy.

The draft provides that companies shall not, under any circumstances, process data in a manner that may cause any harm to children. Companies are also instructed that they cannot monitor the behaviour of children. 

However, even at present, despite age-gating, children are active on social media. The survey was conducted by Britain's Media.com and revealed that more than a third of children between the ages of 8 and 17 are using different social media platforms after signing up with a fake date of birth.
