How to save money and electricity while buying electronic goods?

Nowadays electric appliances like TV, AC, fridges, and washing machines have become a major part of our daily life. When we go to buy them, along with price, features, and quality, there is one more thing on which sellers focus a lot. While counting the features of the product, the star rating is one such thing that is focused and it is directly related to your pocket.

What is this star rating? Which star-rating appliances are better? The need for electronic appliances increases, with the arrival of summer. The power consumption is also very high. In such a situation, the star rating tells about the power consumption of electronic goods. While the product has a higher star rating, its price is also high.

By understanding the meaning of a star rating, you can buy an affordable and good product for yourself. So let us, first of all, understand what is a star rating. If a star rating is given on any appliance, then it shows how energy efficient that appliance is. The work of rating any electronic product is done by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Not only this, this rating is surveyed every year by BEE i.e. Bureau of Energy Efficiency. In this, ratings ranging from one year to five years are given. The star rating gives an idea of how much electricity the product you are buying will consume. Usually, a product with a five-star rating is a bit more expensive as it is believed to consume less power.

In today's time, you will see most appliances with three-star or five-star ratings because the power consumption in them is very less. Simply put, a five-star appliance is the most energy efficient. The same one-star appliance is the least energy efficient. The more energy efficient you are, the more electricity you will save. As we told you earlier, the ratings are updated every year.

Let us also understand the reason behind this. Electronic appliances companies like Samsung, LG, Havells, IFB, Bosch, and Voltas, improve technology every year to make their products even better and their power consumption to a minimum. This is the reason why a product of the same company becomes much better than a year-old product. In such a situation, BEE still rates products.

Which star-rating appliances are better?

Let us now understand the rating and power consumption with an example. If we talk about air conditioning, then AC with a 5-star rating consumes less electricity, due to which your electricity bill comes down. The same consumes more energy than the one with a 3-star rating. 5-star rating AC has a bigger condenser which is efficient for this.

The ACs with the same 3-star rating have smaller condensers, so these are less energy efficient. That's why, there is a difference in power consumption between these two. Compared to AC, generally, people install five-star AC or 3-star AC in their homes. If these two are compared, you can save about 28% more electricity by running 5-star AC.

If we talk in Watt, then running 0.75 ton 3-star AC consumes 524 watts of electricity. Same if you run 5-star AC, then about 450 watts of power is consumed. Similarly, running a one-ton, 3-Star AC consumes 747 watts of electricity, while running one ton 5-star AC consumes 554 watts.

If you calculate the money, then you can save about ₹ 3,000 annually by running a 1.5-ton 5-star AC as compared to a 1.5-ton 3-star AC. If you are going to buy a refrigerator it has 1 star then it is the lowest level star rating. If there is a 1-star sticker on refrigerators, it means that it uses electricity at 487 kilowatts throughout the year.

These refrigerators are available low cost in the market but use more electricity. A rating of 2 stars means that you consume electricity at 389 kilowatts throughout the year. A rating of 3-star means that it consumes electricity at 311 kilowatts throughout the year and refrigerators with a five-star rating consume electricity at 199 kilowatts.

Now the question becomes that nowadays, as the cases of fraud have increased, then how to find out whether the rating given on the product on which you give the star rating is real or fake. For this, first of all when you are going to buy electronic goods, So before that download the official app of BEE on your smartphone to check the rating of appliances. You will see the category of all types of products in this case.

When you choose the product of your choice in this app, the ratings of all the companies will appear in it. After this, you can check the rating of the product by searching for it buying you. Hopefully, the next time you go to buy an electronic appliance, you will be able to take a better decision for yourself.
