How long will diesel vehicles run on the roads of India?
Will diesel cars run in the country or have they? This question must have been troubling you for a long time. The biggest difficulty can be for such people who must have bought a diesel car in the recent past. Also, new customers can postpone the decision to buy diesel cars.
In recent years, you must have heard that diesel-powered four-wheelers will be banned by 2027 in cities with a population of more than one million, and instead electric and gas-fueled vehicles will be promoted. This means that diesel four-wheelers are to be banned by 2027 in all the cities of the country including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Now it is obvious that if this happens then many people will be in trouble. Especially those whose car is not very old, they will have to face a lot of trouble. But now diesel car owners need not worry. Diesel car drivers have got a big relief. The government has made it clear that it has not yet taken any decision regarding banning diesel cars.
The recommendation to ban diesel cars in big cities was made by a government panel Energy Transaction Advisory Committee i.e. ETAC. ETAC in its report recommended that the government should completely ban diesel cars by 2027 in all cities with a population of one million or more. Now the Petroleum Ministry has cleared its stand on this, in which it has said that at present it has no intention of banning diesel cars in big cities.
The Ministry has said on Twitter, the report of the Energy Transition
Advisory Committee has been received by the Petroleum Ministry. The government
is yet to accept the ETAC report. It further states that the suggestions of the
ETAC are related to various stakeholders including different ministries and
states.
Consultations with these stakeholders on the report have not yet been initiated. Talking about cities with a population of 10 lakhs or more includes all the cities of the country including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. In such a situation, according to the recommendation of the panel, by 2027, the running of diesel vehicles in these cities may be completely stopped.
If the government implements this decision then people will have to give up diesel cars. But now stop worrying. The ministry has made it clear that at present they have no plans to stop the sale of diesel cars. The proposal to ban diesel vehicles has been put on hold for the time being. Although the reason behind banning diesel cars was for the benefit of the common people only.
The government has made a big announcement on Diesel cars:
The government wants to reduce carbon emissions in some way and promote electric vehicles so that the environment can be protected and you can get pure and clean air. That's why the central government is giving subsidies to the companies in the manufacture of electric vehicles and also giving subsidies to the customers on their purchase.
From this point of view, this step will seem right for the protection of the environment. But this news was troubling for the companies making diesel cars and for the customers who bought them. But now there is nothing to worry about. For the time being, the government is not going to take such a decision, in which the diesel car will remain only as scrap.
Let us tell you that currently, the registration of diesel cars is valid for 10 years, while petrol vehicles can be run for 15 years. But usually, now SUVs are in diesel engines only, and nowadays people in the country buy and like SUVs a lot. However, in the recent past, the trend of people regarding diesel cars has reduced a bit.
There are many reasons for this. One is pollution and the other is less difference between the prices of diesel and petrol. Third, petrol cars are much cheaper than diesel and the registration of petrol cars is for 15 years. This is the reason that in the past, the share of diesel cars in the total car market has decreased.
In the figures for 2022, diesel cars accounted for 19% of the total cars sold in the country, while petrol vehicles accounted for 68%, CNG accounted for 11% and electric vehicles accounted for 1.3%, and hybrid vehicles 0.5%. In 2022, a total of 7,16,730 diesel cars have been sold in the country, while 25,77,910 petrol vehicles were sold.
Not only this, SUVs accounted for 38% of the total diesel cars, while sedans accounted for 3%. That is, diesel cars are losing their place in the country's car market. Now if the government makes up its mind to remove them from the big cities by 2027, then apparently it can end the market of diesel cars completely.
From that point of view, it is better not to ban diesel cars for the time being and if this does not happen then it will be a relief news for the people. Well, what do you think? Should diesel vehicles be banned in the future today itself or not? Please tell us by commenting.
